February is National Neuter and Spay Awareness month, aiming to further people’s understanding of why neutering your pet is so important. Neutering can be used to refer to either gender, where as ‘spaying’ refers to females and ‘castrating’ refers to males. It is a simple procedure in which the animal’s reproductive organs are removed.

See below for some of the advantages:

Spaying females prevents or reduces:

  • ovarian cancer
  • uterine infections
  • coming into season; the frustration, bleeding and smelliness associated
  • roaming in search of a mate; less likely to go missing or be involved in an accident
  • theft for breeding purposes

Neutering males prevents or reduces:

  • testicular cancer
  • roaming in search of a mate; less likely to go missing or be involved in an accident
  • fighting with other males; reduced vet bills associated with injuries
  • scent spraying and territorial marking; the smelliness and uncleanliness associated
  • theft for breeding purposes

Another benefit of neutering your pet is that it avoids expensive vet bills which may occur as a result of problems during/after pregnancy, during birth, or veterinary attention once the litter has been born. The initial cost of neutering is far cheaper than the costs that can occur if they are not neutered.

All animals adopted from us are neutered as part of their adoption fee.
