August 8th is International Cat Day, let's celebrate and show our appreciation of our feline friends.

Humans and cats have a long and interesting history together, you only have to take one look at the Egyptians to realise how deep the relationship between human and cat goes.

The ancient Egyptians had such a love for cats they believed they were gods and worshipped them as such. They even had a festival in honour of Bastet, a half-human, half feline Goddess. The festival was described as one of the largest and most enthusiastically celebrated in all of Egypt by the Greek historian Herodotus. They built large catteries which were maintained by the temple priests

We might not worship cats as the Ancient Egyptians did but we still need to show our appreciation and care. Let reflect on what makes cats so great.

How can we celebrate International Cat Day?

 •  You can join the thousands on social media sharing their photos, videos and experiences

 •  Volunteer to help support the work that goes into rehabilitating/rehoming cats

 •  Get your four-legged pal a treat, whether a new toy, a snack or anything!

 •  Donate food, blankets or other useful products

If you do share pictures/video on social media remember to use the #internationalcatday hashtag as well as @tagging us so we can join you in the celebrations!
