January is the start of a new year and new habits and what better way to begin the year than celebrating your dog walks! Taking time in the fresh air is beneficial to both you and your dog and is a great way to get exercise, bond with your dog and blow the cobwebs away.

Each week during January, we will be promoting your walks on Facebook and Instagram and asking for photos and videos of the walk to post. It's a great way to share new walk routes with fellow dog-walkers. To kick things off, we have found some super walks, which are dog friendly. Please follow current local and national guidelines when exercising - we have selected a range of walks in different areas, but please do not travel to the venue.

We have had some amazing photos sent to us, showing your pets enjoying quality time with you on some of your favourite local walks.

Freddie can highly recommend Hatfield Moors. Local to people in the Hatfield and Thorne areas, this is an superb area to walk in and enjoy the wildlife that live there.

Arnie had an amazing time in Hexthorpe Dell during the recent snow, but his owner also takes him there all year round. It's a historic location, which is convenient for many people living on the south side of the town centre.

Taking advantage of her local area in Auckley, Tinks likes to take her owner for some long walks beside the river.

Remember to send us your suggestions for walks, which we can share with fellow dog walkers.

Follow these simple guidelines below for a safe and enjoyable dog walk:

  • Wearing brightly coloured or reflective clothing, leashes and collars.
  • Stay in well lit public areas.
  • Ensure your dog has access to plenty of fresh clean water during if on a long walk and afterwards.
  • Protect your dogs feet from the elements - ice, snow and de-icers and grit can all cause nasty sores so be sure to protect your dogs feet and wash them down afterwards.
  • Make sure your dog is warm or cool enough – particularly if young, old or with a condition such as arthritis.
